David Roberts was born in Liverpool.

He had many jobs including shelf stacker, egg fryer, hair washer, film extra, coffee-maker, and hat-maker before finally realising his dream of becoming a children’s book illustrator when his first book ‘Frankie Stein’s Robot’ written by Roy Apps was published in 1998.

Since then he has illustrated works by some fantastic authors such as Andrea Beaty, Peter Bently, Julian Clary, and Julia Donaldson. His most recent works include ‘The Cook and the King’ by Julia Donaldson, ‘Ada Twist, Scientist’ by Andrea Beaty, ‘His Royal Tinyness’ by Sally Lloyd-Jones, and The Bolds series by Julian Clary. He has also written and illustrated Suffragette: The Battle for Equality, shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal 2019.

David is also the creator of the ‘Dirty Bertie’ character about a little boy with bad habits such as picking his nose and trumping loudly! The ‘Dirty Bertie’ series written by Alan MacDonald now has more than 30 titles.

David now lives in London.
