Pam Smy has run a children’s library, worked in a specialist children’s bookshop, has been a trade book buyer and has illustrated books for all ages.

Pam especially loves illustrating chapter books and YA fiction, which she combines with lecturing part-time on the MA in Children’s Book Illustration at Cambridge School of Art. She is one of the founding members of Orange Beak Studio, a mentoring service for emerging illustrators.

With a love of landscape from an early age, Pam Smy’s illustration is focussed on place and the relationship between characters and their environment, and develops this through a combination of drawing from life and creating imaginary spaces and places in her sketchbooks.

She has illustrated books for Linda Newbery, John Agard, Julia Donaldson, Siobhan Dowd and Penelope Lively. Pam’s first novel, Thornhill, was published by David Fickling Books in August 2017.

Pam lives in Cambridge with her husband, the author and illustrator Dave Shelton. She loves walking the dog, drawing, going to the cinema and listening to Radio 4.
